Our mission is the enjoyment, perpetuation and encouragement of all types of acoustic music, educating the public in music appreciation and forms of self entertainment, sharing of musical ideas, venues, performing, passing down, and preserving this region's musical heritage for our youth.

WAFS encourages old time, traditional, folk music and dance. The range of public domain music and songs is enormous. Irish, English, Deep South, African-American, and Native American music gives folks new to the music craft an eye opening experience. Amazingly folks that attend our meetings and gatherings learn so much from other musicians attending.

WAFS also encourages the art of song writing. An internationally known song writing contest is held annually in Wilkesboro, on the campus of Wilkes Community College during MerleFest. We love to hear that someone in our area has written a piece of work to enter in the Chris Austin Song Writing Contest. We welcome you and your family to become a WAFS member. $20 individual, $25 family. Scholarships, meetings, workshops, and special volunteering at MerleFest are just some of the benefits we offer.
